Dating back to Mount Rainier National Park's designation as a national park in 1899, Longmire is often considered the gateway to Mount Rainier, as it was the park headquarters at the time. Currently, the entire Longmire area is a designated national historic district, and it contains the Longmire Museum (open year-round), the Longmire Wilderness Information Center (usually open May-October), the National Park Inn (open year-round) and a parking area that's often used to access several family-friendly hikes.
