GLOBAL COMPETITION OF SOCIAL MESSAGING PLATFORMS with Huatong Son, UW Tacoma

Social media users fracture into tribes, but social media ecosystems are globally interconnected technically, socially, culturally, and economically. This talk reports a study from Sun’s new book “Global Social Media Design" and reveals how cultural consumption and value propositions shaped the global competition of social messaging apps between WhatsApp, WeChat, LINE, and KakaoTalk. Drawing from research findings out of local communities, this talk will explore the complicity and dynamics of global cultural diversity and cultural sensitivity in social media design. It will also showcase UWT student projects of localizing/redesigning social messaging apps to bridge cultural differences.

Huatong Sun is Associate Professor of Digital Media and Global Design at the University of Washington Tacoma. She is an Oxford University Press author with two books “Cross-Cultural Technology Design” (2012) and “Global Social Media Design” (2020). The first book won a best technical communication book award from the National Council of Teachers of English and received endorsements from “Fast Company” and “User Experience Magazine.” A SXSW speaker, she has offered invited lectures and design workshops at local practitioner meetings, international conferences, and leading universities in North America, Asia, and Europe.
