PRESS RELEASE

Tacoma, WA  Tacoma Art Museums building is turning 10 years old and were throwing a party to celebrate! Come and join in the festivities as we also welcome in the Spring at our 10th Birthday Spring Festival on Saturday, May 4 from 10 am to 5 pm. Museum admission and all festival events will be free of charge for Saturdays celebration.

Tacoma Art Museum moved to 1701 Pacific Avenue in 2003. Architect Antoine Predock saw in Tacomas misty, muted light a great opportunity to design a building that almost disappears into its surroundings, much like how Mount Rainier fades depending on the light and weather. The buildings stainless steel skin pays homage to its industrial, port city surroundings as its silver patina glistens in the Northwests watery light.

After 10 years of continuous use as the community's living room, we welcome the public to a family-oriented celebration with a variety of activities to choose from. Magician Jeff Evans will mystify us with his skills while the music ensemble Jazz Misfits gets guests into a party groove. Hands-on art activities ramp up the artistic spirit and include decorating a flat Leroy (the museums famous dog mascot) and the chance to design your own pop-up flower garden card. Like to make art with others? Then turn your attention to decorating the community color wheel installation or join the community collage activity in front of the museum on the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation Plaza. When you need a short break, watch a performance by the students of Grant Elementary or visit the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Art Resource Center located on the third floor of the museum and learn about Northwest artists by reading a book in our extensive art library or watching a short film on the subject.
