Steilacoom has the distinction of being the oldest incorporated town in Washington [1854]. The entire town is on the National Register of Historic Places! Steilacoom also gave Washington its first Protestant church [1853], first library [1858] and first jail [1858]. Located south of Tacoma along the Puget Sound, Steilacoom's visitor attractions include the 1857 Nathaniel Orr Home with its original furnishings; Steilacoom History Museum with its collection of 1860-1900 pioneer artifacts; Bair Drug & Hardware Store, built in 1895, plus a 1905 soda fountain; and Steilacoom Tribal Cultural Center and Museum.
