Maestro Attar leads the Northwest Sinfonietta in a dynamic program of Italian-inspired works. The program begins with Luigi Boccherini's interpretation of the story of Don Juan, Symphony No. 4, "La casa del Diavolo". Next, Canadian guitarist Daniel Bolshoy joins the Sinfonietta to perform a rare gem, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Guitar Concerto No. 1. Written in 1939, the same year that the composer emigrated to the United States to escape anti-Semitic purges in his native Italy, the work was dedicated to virtuoso Andrés Segovia and is described as a "tender farewell" to the composer's homeland. The program closes with Felix Mendelssohn's gorgeous "Italian" symphony, Symphony no. 4 in A major, an homage to the beauty and, to Mendelssohn, exoticism of Italy.
