South Sound Craft Beer Festival: Make a weekend of it!

Monday, October 24, 2016 2:00 PM by Matt Wakefield

What’s better than heading to a beer festival with many of the best craft beers in the world? How about when the festival heads to you?

On Nov. 5, many of the top craft breweries in the Pacific Northwest (and, by extension, the world) bring their finest drinkable wares to the Tacoma Dome for the South Sound Craft Beer Festival. Thirty seven breweries – including local favorites Wingman, Harmon, Odd Otter, Seven Seas and Gig Harbor Brewing – will be pouring their flagship beers, seasonals and, of course, IPAs.

With kegs of high-ABV, high-IBU goodness flowing relatively freely, and true beer Nirvana always lurking just one tasting away, consider making a craft beer weekend out of the festival. Here’s how you can turn the event into a weekend getaway filled with hoppy memories.

Stay

Park your car and stay at the Best Western Plus Tacoma Dome Hotel, located less than a five-minute walk from the Tacoma Dome, where the South Sound Craft Beer Festival is held.

Eat

Before the festival, line your stomach with some cheap, delicious carbs at Friesenburgers, home to the area’s best deep-fried hot dog. It’s just five minutes’ walk from your hotel and the Tacoma Dome.

The festival runs Saturday, Nov. 5 from noon to 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and admission includes a commemorative tasting glass and, more importantly, six five-ounce tastings. Additional tokens are $2 each or three for $5.

After-party

Once you’ve found your favorite Tacoma beer(s) at the festival, take the free Tacoma Link Light Rail to the brewery’s taproom. Each is located directly on the line, or just a short walk from it:

Back to the hotel

Once you’ve had your fill (and maybe a growler to go), take the Tacoma Link Light Rail to the Tacoma Dome Station, right next to your hotel.

Pro tip:

Don’t forget to bring your South Sound Craft Crawl passport to collect some stamps.
