In December, Barb Kimbrough, a lifetime Pierce County resident, was honored as the Visitor Information Center's 2011 Volunteer of the Year. Barb has been a volunteer at the VIC for three years, working in the office and helping out onsite at conferences.

Learn about Barb and her time at the VIC:

What's your favorite part about volunteering at the VIC?

I enjoy the contact with people. I love meeting and talking to visitors and selling Tacoma and Pierce County. Especially when people come down from Seattle, it's always fun to see the amazed looks on their faces. They think we don't have anything, and come to find out we have a lot! They're just amazed at the transformation and that there's no more aroma!

What are you favorite things about Tacoma + Pierce County?
The museums, theaters, Point Defiance and Ruston Way.

Why do you tell people to visit?
We're friendly and there is a lot to see and do here, a lot more than most people realize.

When you're not volunteering at the VIC, what are you likely doing?
Gardening, skiing, walking or reading.

How did it feel when you learned you received the Volunteer of the Year award?
It was a total shock. I had no idea!
